Bee assault postpones flight in India

(MENAFN) A flight departing from Surat International Airport in Gujarat, India, was delayed by over an hour after a swarm of bees surrounded the plane’s luggage door, media reports revealed on Tuesday.

Passengers onboard the Indigo flight had to wait as airport staff worked to clear the bees, which had concentrated around the door area. Initial attempts to disperse the insects using smoke were unsuccessful, prompting the involvement of the fire brigade, who sprayed water on the bees to remove them.

An airport official told the Times of India, “We called the fire team, who used a water jet from a fire truck to clear the bees from the open cargo door.” Following the intervention, the flight to Jaipur took off with a delay of about one hour, local sources reported.

Similar bee-related disruptions have occurred before; in 2019 and 2020, Air India flights in Kolkata experienced delays when swarms settled near the cockpit window and cargo hold, respectively, according to The Indian Express.

India’s rapidly expanding aviation industry has faced several challenges recently. Notably, in June, a Boeing 787 flying to the UK crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, hitting a medical college hostel. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has submitted its preliminary crash report to the Aviation Ministry, though details remain confidential, news agency ANI reported.
